CanadaAbout The Department of Canadian Heritage

The Canadian Atlas Online project was made possible with the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage through Canadian Culture Online.

The three volumes of the Historical Atlas of Canada were originally published between 1987 and 1993, gaining immediate critical and commercial success, and quickly becoming essential works for the understanding of Canadian history and geography. As the volumes’ publisher, UTP is honoured to have been able to work with the Canadian Atlas Online project to make them available to an even wider audience.

The Royal Canadian Geographical SocietyAbout The Royal Canadian Geographical Society

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, one of Canada’s largest non-profit educational organizations with over 200,000 members, was founded in 1929. The first issue of Canadian Geographic magazine was published in 1930.

The mandate of the Society “to make Canada better known to Canadians and to the world” has not changed in 75 years.

Today, each issue of the Society’s magazines, Canadian Geographic and géographica, are read by over 5 million Canadians. In addition, we reach even more Canadians through our CG Presents and CG Kids television programs.

The Canadian Council for Geographic Education organizes programs to support teachers in the classroom. The Great Canadian Geography Challenge, our national student competition, has attracted more than 2 million student participants since its start in 1994.

The Society also offers studentships and grants to support university students undertaking geographical research projects. In addition, the Society provides funding assistance to Canadian expeditions.

A national program of lecture presentations is organized by the Society every year.

Microsoft CanadaAbout Microsoft Canada Co.

Microsoft Canada Co. is proud to have supplied the technology that has helped The Canadian Atlas Online become a reality.

Because it is unique, and unlike any other online mapping resource currently available, The Canadian Atlas Online required a complex and multi-layered system to support it. Canadian Geographic also knew it needed a reliable, foolproof system that would allow it to execute its vision for the atlas in a timely manner.

After considering its needs Canadian Geographic chose the Microsoft Windows® Server 2003 Operating system to help it build a secure, reliable platform for The Canadian Atlas Online. Canadian Geographic also selected its companion, SQL Server 2000™ software, to help store the massive amounts of data needed to make the atlas a compelling research and education tool.

Microsoft Visual Studio® development system was chosen to help developers quickly and efficiently build and customize The Canadian Atlas Online. Not only did Visual Studio help Canadian Geographic create the site, it also seamlessly tied the other Microsoft tools together, helping to make The Canadian Atlas Online a success.
